First Nations Futures is changing who holds the power in philanthropy

In a sector long shaped by donor-driven agendas and fixed outcomes, First Nations Futures is taking a different approach. By placing resources directly into the hands of Indigenous communities, it is rebalancing who holds the power in philanthropy. In July 2024 alone, grassroots First Nations groups received $340,000 in unrestricted funding, giving them the freedom to address their own priorities in ways that resonate deeply within their communities.
At the forefront of this change is Barbie-Lee Kirby, Executive Director of First Nations Futures and a proud First Nations woman from Brewarrina in Far West NSW, with Ngemba, Wailwan, Paakintyi-Maraura, Gamilaraay, and Yuwaalaraay heritage. In the months since, First Nations Futures has channelled a further $160,000 to partner organisations across Northern Australia, continuing to strengthen community-led efforts. “I strongly believe in the importance of First Nations Futures’ journey towards economic justice for First Peoples in Australia,” Kirby says.
By providing unrestricted funding, we empower communities to invest directly in their priorities—whether that’s strengthening cultural programs, creating employment pathways, or supporting young people.
Early feedback from partners highlights marked increases in community confidence, capability, and independence—often experiencing unrestricted funding for the first time. Kirby remains focused on amplifying these achievements by fostering global connections: “I’m dedicated to connecting with a global community of like-minded organisations, exploring shared learning and collaboration opportunities, and bringing new insights back to further strengthen First Nations Futures’ impact.”
In reshaping the philanthropic landscape, First Nations Futures is pioneering a powerful shift toward true self-determination and sustainable futures for Indigenous communities across Australia. To learn more about their work, visit their website:https://www.firstnationsfutures.com
